A lead guitar is to a rock band like water to a fish. Without the lead guitar, the band would certainly not be classified as a real rock band—all the more important for those who are interested in playing in a rock band to take lead guitar lessons. While the best lead guitars can’t simple be ‘taught’ talent, lead guitar lessons will aid an interested guitarist in discovering their creative voice by mastering advanced playing techniques.

Before anyone takes lead guitar lessons, they should already be well familiar with the basics of playing a guitar. If you are a new player, you would do well to avoid trying to lumber through the advanced scope of a lead guitar lesson, as you simply will not have an appreciation for the nature of the lessons. Lead guitar lessons are heavily focused on developing the skills to create great improvisational solos, and to develop a second nature for pulling off difficult guitar maneuvers. To avoid any headaches, a hopeful lead guitarist should certainly make sure they know how to finger all the main chords, complete a full chromatic scale, and have a fair amount of experience playing their guitar before they tackle the lead guitar lesson curriculum.

A common starting point for many lead guitar lessons is to analyze and mimic a typical guitar solo that is recorded for study. It helps to select a solo in the same style as that which a guitarist is interested in playing eventually, but the simpler the better. Noting all the improvisational techniques used by the original soloist, a lead guitar student can improve by leaps and bounds in their own solo technique by learning how to pull of the same techniques themselves. A noteworthy technique that is typically taught in lead guitar lessons is the “bend”, or a measured warping of a note using a sliding pressure with depressed fret fingers. Many advanced soloists will also exploit other fretting maneuvers, like the so-called “hammer on” techniques which allow a guitarist to play two or more notes while using only a single pick of the string. “Pull offs” are similar to the hammer on, except it works backwards by using a single pick and letting a fret finger slide off the string so that the next fret will be heard without a second pick.

Lead guitar lessons will also involve heavy work in alternate fingerings for chords. Using barre chords will dramatically increase the options for the soloing guitar player by adding a number of alternative fretting choices for a single chord. For electric guitars that are equipped with it, work with a trembolo (or “whammy bar,” which creates a unique vibrato effect for sustained notes) will certainly be explored as a favorite weapon of choice for many famous lead guitarists. After a significant amount of lead guitar lessons, most players will have the confidence and creativity to begin performing great-sounding solos. Again, lead guitar lessons aren’t an easy ticket to sounding like Eric Clapton, but you’ll probably be a giant step closer!

Looking for an easy musical instrument to pick up and quickly learn to play? Look no further than the guitar, unlike the trumpet or the saxophone you can still play the guitar without having to have a great lung capacity! Choosing to play the guitar is also a great way to keep you and others entertained during a blackout! But speaking seriously, it has never been easier to learn how to play the guitar with the many different new media options for beginners to choose from. Whether you are learning from the home using online lessons, practicing with a musical instruction book, or taking lessons from an experienced guitarist new students of the guitar who are prepared to dedicate time and effort will find learning to be easy and fun!

It’s a common misconception that learning to play the guitar is a complicated affair. While advanced techniques are certainly hard to master even after years of experience, it is quite easy to pick up a guitar and a few days or weeks later being able to play a complete song. For the most part, most musicians compare the guitar to the piano—while anybody can be daunted when they hear a classical piano overture it realistically will only take even a novice piano player a few weeks to perfect such a piece with proper instruction. After learning proper hand positions, basic chord fingerings and the various strumming methods (using either a pick for steel strings or the plucking by hand for nylon) a new player has mastered most of the basic steps they need in order to begin playing songs! If it sounds too easy to be true, give it a try for yourself and marvel at the quick results when you learn to play for yourself.

What sets the guitar apart from many other instruments is that it is easy to learn, yet very difficult to master. While anyone who’s learned the basics will find it rather easy to mimic the various electric lead guitar parts from their favorite rock songs, the average person’s cringing at the mention of the phrase “garage rock band” should tell how much practice it actually takes in order to hone impressive guitar skills. After all, learning to play basic songs in barely scratching the surface of what you can do with a guitar—if you’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing a skilled lone acoustic guitar player you may have been amazed at their ability to play not only the melody, but also a sort of rhythm and harmony using various chord and strumming techniques. Many professional musicians that play in front of live audiences are capable of giving brilliant and full performances using only a guitar and their voice for the entire night. The sky is the limit for guitar players after they learn the basics—while it’s easy to learn how to begin playing songs it’s also easy to become hooked on improving yourself as a guitar player once you start!

There are various ways to learn how to play the guitar. For those seeking to gain the necessary basics steps to start playing the guitar as fast as possible, the only real requirement for beginners is to extensively practice as much as possible. Some methods of learning the guitar are better suited for a heavy practice regimen than others, however. If you are serious about dedicating yourself to a heavy daily schedule of at least 3-4 hours of guitar practice without fail, it’s perhaps best to look into an online guitar lesson to compliment the advanced pace.

While using traditional methods of learning the guitar (like taking a class or hiring a private instructor) work just as well, it’s only with an online curriculum that you can manually control the pacing of your guitar lessons to suit your individual needs. Classes are typically only as fast as the least-successful student, meaning that a slower learner will drag down the pace of the entire classroom—not to mention gleaning away the majority of the guitar teacher’s attention. While it’s theoretically possible to hire a private instructor that will be able to match the pace of a rapid learner, they not only cost more than online lessons but are only available during assigned rehearsal times (usually once or twice a week for an hour or two at a time). Why be forced to match an instructor’s pacing and schedule when you can set your own with an online curriculum?

Learning the guitar fast is a very real possibility thanks to resources offered online. Many online guitar lesson websites separate lessons from basic techniques to gradually more advanced. If you practice enough, it’s possible to quickly move through the lessons at an accelerated pace, and receive as many new lessons per day as you can get through successfully. Of course, much of learning the guitar is daily repetition along with the memorization of techniques and fingerings, so in that respect it’s not possible to ‘speed up’ the retention of basic guitar skills. However as stated earlier, committing to extra practice every day makes it more likely to quickly learn the basic techniques that allow for advancing further, faster.

Beginning guitarists should make no mistake though. They aren’t taking any ‘shortcuts’ in learning the guitar—it works out to the same amount of practice regardless of if they practice for a half-hour a day or 4 hours a day. So saying, the only thing to take away from attempting to learn the guitar as fast as possible is that you will definitely need to have a lot of free time in order to support the long hours of practice time that comes with rapid learning. There’s always the danger of ‘burning out’ whenever you attempt to learn anything this way, so take caution in deciding how much time to dedicate to practice before you find your motivation sliding away long before you’ve actually reached the goal of learning how to play the guitar.

Unless a new guitar player has an unusually strong propensity for sell-instruction, guitar lessons remain the single most effective way to master the art. Typically, most guitar lessons are given by professional guitarists to new students on a weekly basis at a nominal fee. There is also a vast amount of literature dedicated to guitar lessons, mostly for beginners and unique advanced techniques. In addition to the literature, online sources for guitar lessons have increasingly become available in this post-internet age.

Younger students occasionally have the option of joining a school band in order to acquire the skills of a guitar instructor, yet for the most part guitars (and thus, guitar lessons and instructors) remain outside of the school band repertoire along with pianos, violins, and other string instruments. The trend can be explained by the lack of string instruments in a traditional marching band (although certain public schools do have a musical department wealthy enough for the inclusion of a string orchestra). The level of time/dedication required to instruct lessons for guitar players specifically is perhaps the reason why it remains regulated to independent instruction outside of the education industry. While every school jazz band will, at least, require either a guitar and/or a string bass player (in addition to a piano player) these instruments are rarely taught as part of a curriculum, unfortunately.

The lack of guitar instruction at the school level serves to create a robust independent market for offering lessons to new guitar players. While practically anybody who knows how to play a chord can theoretically give guitar lessons, a professional guitarist (especially a professional musician still actively performing) that offers guitar lessons will command a nice premium price tag for their instructional services. While again, it is possible to self-instruct in the guitar basics, it cannot be overstated how valuable professional lessons are for a new player. The combination of hearing/seeing/experiencing firsthand what an accomplished guitarist can do with the very instrument one is currently taking lessons to learn is an incalculable advantage towards the eventual mastery of the art.

Most professional guitar instructors give lessons in the form of teaching songs to the student. After learning the basic chords and positioning for fingered notes, a student slowly hones their craft by playing songs of varying difficulty while the instructor critiques. This is the tried-and-true method of instruction for most musical instruments, teaching both the reading of sheet music as well as techniques of increasing difficulty to improve overall instrument mastery.

Songs also serve as a useful motivational tool for a new guitarist taking lessons. As is oft the case, a new player has a guitar ‘idol’ she wishes to emulate, and will hasten to practice assigned songs that are from her favorite album, for example. The idealistic victory of learning to perfectly imitate a guitarist after a long period of wishing to be as proficient in playing is a strong tool that many instructors use to help their students in becoming a confident future guitar player.

Before recently, getting instruction in musical instruments like the guitar held high barriers for new learners, considering the difficulty presented with instructional literature that featured pages of alien-looking (to beginners) guitar scale and fingering charts, chord progressions, and sheet music that all required the presence of a live guitar tutor to help ‘decode’. Perhaps this high barrier is the reason for today’s high popularity of so-called ‘look and learn’ guitar lessons, which refer to a radical new way of guitar instruction using online resources and streaming video in conjunction with real tutors who professionally instruct student guitarists.

Look and learn guitar lessons are, by nature, the same method of instruction found in traditional guitar lessons with a live tutor. Yet, look and learn lessons also offer certain benefits due to the new media format of being online: students can skip ahead a few lessons or repeat those they may not have fully understood; they can pause/rewind/fast-forward the streaming videos during instruction to suit their individual learning schedule; the use of close-up shots on hand positions while video instructors demonstrate scales, chords, and while playing songs helps students achieve proper posture and optimal finger placement; the use of professional instructors as the video tutors effectively gives a student guitarist a comparable lesson when compared to traditional guitar lessons.

There are virtually no parts of a traditional guitar lesson that do not translate well into a ‘look and learn’ environment. Showing students how to properly tune a guitar can be simply and effectively presented compared to simply reading vague descriptions of how to do so in an instruction book/lesson manual. The repetition of seeing professional tutors on look and learn guitar lessons with proper seated positions and finger placement (especially for students that like to repeat these lessons more than one time) translates into retaining good playing practices that may/may not be as well communicated in a traditional guitar lesson. The orientation of look and learn guitar lessons on the internet makes for an easy way to quickly search online for more information when a particular part of the lesson intrigues a student, or calls for more research to fully grasp a concept.

Look and learn guitar lessons also typically provide their students with supplementary downloads to go along with the general instruction via streaming video. Using printable sheet music for practice lessons, perfectly-tuned digital audio samples and accompaniment, and certain other materials for specific techniques (i.e. transcribed guitar riffs from famous musicians, genre-specific licks and chord progression charts, etc.) the look and learn guitar lesson can be just as effective and even more flexible than traditional guitar instruction. Save for advanced students’ need to have a direct feedback and individualized learning from those trained to do exactly that in order to further their mastery of the guitar, look and learn lessons can be the answer to a new student guitarist’s prayers if they are looking for a cheaper, more flexible alternative of learning to play the guitar.

After establishing a desire to learn how to play guitar, the first thing to do is find a method for learning the basics. If this is your first experience playing a musical instrument (including the human voice), it certainly is to your advantage to seek out professional instruction from a qualified guitar teacher. As luck would have it, many instructors have lately been turning to the web in order to reach new guitar students who are asking how to learn to play guitar using online methods of instruction. As an alternative method of taking guitar lessons, the internet holds a lot of advantages over more traditional forms of learning.

When a new guitar student has their first lesson, the hard-working reality of learning how to play guitar versus perhaps a more idealistic view of becoming a ‘rock star’ within a few weeks starts to set in. While learning how to play the guitar is not a hobby that everyone has the patience to stick with, it might make the journey a bit easier should they decide to utilize online guitar lessons instead of a traditional method. One advantage of online lessons is the flexibility of learning at your own pace, in your own home. Rather than being hassled by traveling to an off-site guitar class every week, or having to set aside time whenever the private tutor arrives to instruct the day’s guitar techniques, new students of the guitar can begin and end lessons whenever and wherever they desire. Using streaming video lessons to learn basic techniques is just as effective as a demonstration from a real live instructor—just much cheaper on the wallet!

With the internet, new students of the guitar can also grab any extra information about guitar theory, or other aspect that will help them learn how to play from a variety of web-based sources. A simple internet search can pull up dozens of sites dedicated to the beginning guitar player, with free tips and hints to help find success. There’s probably a website that features the very model of guitar a new student is working with, along with feedback from fellow beginners with insights on how to get the best sound out of the guitar or where to go for repairs. The best thing about taking guitar lessons online is the fact that almost every bit of information you can find to help you learn how to play the guitar is absolutely free!

Learning how to play the guitar mainly comes down to practice, practice, and more practice. Nobody ever advances very far in any new skill unless they’ve set aside a significant amount of time to improve themselves. As with anything else, becoming proficient at the guitar will rely solely on the determination of the guitar student, regardless of the method used for learning. With that in mind, be sure to give the guitar a try if you really think you have what it takes to rock and roll!

Whether it’s a Paul Reed Smith or a Flying V model, there’s always been a great demand from music fans to learn how to play the electric guitar in order to jam out to their favorite bands on their own “ax”. It’s no secret that getting your electric guitar skill level as high as a Clapton or a Hendrix will require vast amounts of time and practice to achieve, yet many people realize the hard way that traditional methods of learning how to play the electric guitar presents a challenge beyond their patience. New students of the electric guitar can find an easier ‘tutorial’ of sorts by learning the acoustic guitar before they begin learning how to play with the electric guitar (plus the amplifier), and thus avoid dealing with the additional variables that are unrelated to simply learning the fundamentals of guitar play.

One of your first lessons while learning how to play the electric guitar will be to find the best sound possible when picking strings. Contrary to an acoustic guitar’s nylon strings (which can be plucked by using fingers) it sounds best when using a pick for playing an electric guitar’s steel strings. Nearby the bridge area of on an electric guitar are variously placed devices called ‘pickups’. These devices will literally ‘pick up’ the sound vibrations that travel when picking strings on an electric guitar, and be sent to the amplifier to produce a sound. The amp will also feedback any interference from other electrical signals in the area, giving electric guitar players the unfortunate possibility of having an unwanted burst of noise coming out of the amp if, for instance, a speaker or two gets placed too close by a live amp!

When you learn how to play the electric guitar, you will study the balance between the electric guitar, pickups, and amplifier while experimenting on how to obtain the ideal sound when playing. The location of the pickups on the electric guitar will determine the effect it has on the richness of sound coming out of the amp, and represents a relationship within the electric guitar and amp just as integral as the one between player and guitar. Depending on the brand of amplifier used, that too will determine the tone of the sound (whether it is dark/light, more/less distorted, or how resonant it will be). If at this point you find yourself marveling at the amount of considerations to be taken in when playing the electric guitar, this is the very reason why it’s typically better for beginners to first learn on the acoustic guitar, to allow focusing on the basic fundamentals of learning how to play.

Despite all the variables to account for, there are a few advantages associated with when you learn how to play the electric guitar versus learning on an acoustic guitar. Rather than managing a bulky, awkwardly-shaped acoustic guitar (engineered to produce a natural acoustic resonance from the hollow body and soundhole located near the center) the electric guitar has no such requirements in shape. If you’ve ever wanted to play behind-the-back style, or with your teeth (heaven forbid!) you’ll only be able to pull those rockstar-like moves off with an electric guitar!

Handled largely the same as an adult lesson, guitar lessons for children are typically more focused on specific fundamental techniques of guitar play, and are generally similar to classroom-based education. Kids retain information best when presented with guitar lessons in a deliberately structured way, which truly extends for learning to play the guitar as well. Initially having children become familiar with the guitar’s parts and the functions of each, children guitar instructors will devote early lessons to learning how to tune the instrument, and helping children get a feel for the sound they can produce. Afterwards, children will be taught a daily practice regimen of playing major and minor scales every session to warm up, learning the chromatic scale in order to help memorize the notes before reading sheet music, and fingering/memorizing basic chords. Using this deliberate structure will yield marked improvements in the children’s guitar skills that are easily visible to parents, and helps kids retain the information long past the point where they become advanced players (while still holding a strong base for the fundamental basics).

Somewhat similar to foreign language learning at an early age, children that are exposed to instruction in musical instruments will learn techniques faster and become adept at the guitar at an increased rate when compared to older guitar students. Tackling advanced concepts at an earlier age, most famous guitarist have had their early guitar lessons while still children to thank for their current proficiency and talent. In fact, the advanced techniques (i.e. solo improvisation) that many adult student guitarists struggle with for years to master are learned quickly and easily by most children guitarists thanks to a strong foundation of the basic built at an early age. Of course natural talent does help a young guitarist in quickly assimilating guitar skills, it’s generally understood and agreed by all that the younger you begin playing, the more potential a guitar player will have in the future.

Not only a great idea for kids who love rock and roll, literally every child without a hobby can be a candidate for taking guitar lessons. It’s well documented that when exposed to musical influences while in school (either by joining the school band, the choir, or by taking guitar lessons as a child) leads to better performance overall in standardized tests and social settings. This will naturally lead to a better career in the future, thanks to the instilled values children will get from practicing their guitar daily—for they already know that perseverance and hard work is guaranteed to pay off!

Learning to play the guitar is an all-encompassing education, in that there are a large variety of things to learn before mastering the art. The guitar, more so than other musical instruments, has the unique ability to be a vehicle for many different genres of music. Whether it’s punk, rock, country/western, or metal, learning how to play the guitar will present a wide array of options to further guitar study by specializing in a type of music. A lot of new players learn to play the acoustic guitar while interested in eventually learning to play blues guitar. As a pre-cursor for rock and roll, and rhythm and blues, blues guitar players like Robert Johnson are credited with revolutionizing the art of guitar playing.

Learning how to play the blues begins with a study of the music itself. As with any genre, imitation of transcribed music is one of the only ways to learn how to mimic the specific techniques used for a particular style. Most blues guitar players are well-versed in many advanced guitar techniques, such as the ‘slide’ or ‘bottle neck’ guitar style (used by wearing a ’slide’ or classically an actual bottle neck on the fingers that make contact with the fretboard to slide up and down picked strings) and the ‘rhythm’ guitar style (a deliberate succession of chords strummed to a specific rhythm to accompany a vocal/lead melody line). These different styles require extensive practice, and a lot of experience in playing the guitar (and some talent with improvisation as well) before a person who’s learning how to play blues guitar can reach their goal.

While it’s true that blues guitar is mostly played using an acoustic guitar, there are certain cases where electric guitars are preferred. Certainly an electric bass guitar with a strong bass line can be used to drive a heavy blues song forward. There are also hybrid electric guitars created with hollow bodies to produce a sort of resonance that works well in blues guitar styles. Certain types of electric guitar with a unique pickup/amplifier combination can also be used to emulate the sound most blues guitar styles work well with. Ultimately for a classical blues guitar song, the use of a single acoustic guitar along with vocals provided by the blues guitarist serves as the only allowable ingredients.

Icons in the history of blues genre like Robert Johnson taught themselves how to learn to play blues guitar. Of course, there was an old legend concerning Johnson that claims he met the Devil at the crossroads, and ended up selling his soul in order to be the best guitar player in the world! Regardless of the legends, Johnson’s skills at blues guitar can’t be denied—and whether he practiced daily for his skills or otherwise, the only way for today’s student of blues guitar to learn to play is by hard work and dedication. With enough persistence fans might one day make a legend or two based on your great blues guitar skills!

If you are a fan of Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, or Jimi Hendrix, you most likely have a special place in your hard for the rock guitar style of play. It’s no small wonder that many ‘rock hero’-type videogames are rapidly becoming the best-selling games of all time, due to the large amount of fans that adore the rock music genre. This natural has led to an increase in the popularity of learning how to play rock guitar, a particular style used by electric guitar players such as the artists mentioned earlier. It certainly can be glamorous to see how wild a rock guitarist’s lifestyle can get by watching them on television or in live concerts, but make no mistake that learning the rock guitar is a process filled with determination, dedication, and commitment.

Learning to play rock guitar first starts with learning the basic fundamentals of the guitar. Once you’ve mastered playing the chromatic scale, memorized rock (and other genre) chords and chord progressions, and have attained a significant amount of experience playing songs on the electric guitar, you’ll be ready to start a serious effort to learn to play rock guitar. It’s helpful to find a professional guitarist to help you train properly, but in the absence of that there are many online resources available dedicated to helping new rockers gain the skills required to play rock guitar (also called ‘lead guitar’).

A common method to train without having a traditional instructor is to use recordings and transcribed rock songs in order to practice the various rock guitar techniques that are used. The rock guitar student will be charged with becoming familiar with such techniques as the hammer on, the pull off, sliding, rhythm guitar play, and exploiting the trembolo/whammy bar for sustained notes. One of the most important talents of a rock guitarist is their ability to improvise solos, or play alone without accompaniment (save a rhythm section) or any sheet music. Indicative of the high challenge of learning to play rock guitar, solo improvisation and the advanced techniques used by rock guitarists generally take ages (we’re talking years here) to perfect and master, so don’t get discouraged if your first day of solo improvisation sounds more like open mic night at the YMCA and less like Hendrix in his prime.

Learning to play rock guitar is a challenging, yet rewarding hobby to pick up for any serious electric guitar player. If you have dreams of using your newly found rock guitar skills to become rich and famous, you should realize beforehand that many guitarists more talented than you have been seeking that very same dream for years without much success past the independent circuit. As such, it makes a lot more sense to learn rock guitar out of a genuine love for the music, instead of out of a drive to make a lot of money easily. As already mentioned, you’ll need years of dedication to really become worthwhile as a rock guitarist, so if it’s truly what you want to do definitely give it your all!
